Candle Pen took home eight awards in the second online Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) held last July 15, with then Literary Editor Tara Sabrina Mohammad leading the team with bagging the top award in her category.
Mohammad, who now serves as the managing editor for publication, won first place in the Copyreading and Headline Writing contest, besting the other public and private high schools in Makati City.
It can still be remembered that in the previous DSPC in 2021, former Editor-in-Chief Eunso Im also won in champion in the same category.
Sweeping a surprise third place win in the Photojournalism category is John Raphael Yu, a former photojournalist of the organization.
Alexander Rafael Reporte proved his Filipino skills as he won fifth place in the Pagsulat ng Balitang Pampalakasan while Vian Sander Ching, now the associate editor for radio, achieved sixth place in the Sports Writing contest.
Editors-in-Chief Jasmine Kimberly Ngo and Jazlyn Grace Ong both won sixth place in the News Writing and Editorial Writing categories, respectively.
Ngo was also elected as the Vice President of the Editors Guild for High School of Makati City.
Mikaela Alyn Motol and Faith Angeline Ongaria, now managing editors for relations and radio, bagged seventh place in the Feature Writing and Science Writing categories.
Other writers who joined the competition were Alison Christian Go for Pagkuha ng Larawan and Clara Arella Kristian Tan for Editorial Cartooning.
All the campus journalists were trained and mentored by their moderator John Laurence Guzman.
With the new school year, Candle Pen is still accepting applications for volunteers and members to be part of the different events and projects that will be launched.
