MHCS athletes boxed out their opponents and took a shot at victory at the Christian Schools Athletic League (CSAL) that lasted from March 9 to April 27.
The MHCS Basketball Varsity finished strong as they bagged the 1st Runner-Up title in the 13 Under category and the 2nd Runner-Up award in the 18 Under category. Likewise, the MHCS Volleyball Varsity showcased their prowess and swooped a 1st Runner-Up finish in the Volleyball 16 Under category.
Teamwork topped with tactical strategy heightened the adrenaline of the basketball team on the court. Grade 10 basketball and CSAL mythical five player Paulie Go mentioned that the Basketball Varsity mastered their sets and plays. Moreover, they also conditioned and strengthened their body in preparation for the game.
Likewise, the Volleyball Varsity reported to have demonstrated their incredible defense through their fiery serving and powerful spikes that earned their place in the game. The team claimed their wins through rigorous training and refinement of their positioning, defense, and attacks.
Grade 9 volleyball players Kelly Co and Lok Yi Yeung both earned the Mythical Six for their exceptional performance and determination, with Co also receiving the title of “Best Receiver.” On the other hand, the spirited Bence Chicombing from Grade 7 and Runthoel Haloc from Grade 8 seized the prestigious Mythical 1st Team for basketball.
Volleyball Coach Sherwin Villarin mentioned that the league has intensified the skills of the athletes, improving their mental toughness and determination on the court, and to a greater extent, cultivating a better sense of discipline and maturity. Additionally, he shared that the experience provided the athletes with the value of sportsmanship and respect for rivaling teams.
The student-athletes credited their wins to their coaches: “We’d like to thank them because they were with us through good and bad; they still stuck with us even though at times when we experience losses. Moreover, Grade 7 volleyball player Marianny Briagas stated: “We would like to thank our coaches for supporting us and guiding us throughout the game and to thank them for helping us improve a lot in the CSAL event”.
Bence Chicombing enthusiastically shared that, “After the tournament, our team felt good because we placed second and our expectations were met as well because we weren’t expecting that.”
