Makati Hope Christian School (MHCS) has celebrated an important event held every year– Teachers’ Day. This event is where students and teachers gather to have fun and interact with one another.
Students had the opportunity to show appreciation to all the teachers for their hard work, patience, determination, dedication, and loyalty to their job and duties. Let’s go back in time and relive the moments of the program.
On Wednesday, September 27, 2023, the day started off with the high school students doing their homeroom routine Face-to-Face (F2F), while the elementary students had theirs in an online setup.
Some of the students even surprised their advisers with greetings, cakes, posters, and thoughtful messages.
The advisers of the class then moved on to discuss and orient the schedule for the following program. Part of the schedule included a paper flower-making activity for the high school F2F students and coloring activities for the elementary online students. Using the materials provided, the high school students made a variety of flowers with heartfelt messages for the teachers.
Classes also played lively, popular, and even Christmas music to lighten the mood and come together to celebrate. Moreover, the Candle Pen crew then interviewed some of the teachers, such as Mr. Danilo Franco and Ms. Alyssa Aurelio about their expectations on the following program.
Mr. Franco has stated that his expectations were regarding the students’ performances and going along with the flow of the program, while Ms. Aurelio expressed her having fun with her students and co-teachers.
The class representatives and officers accompanied the students up to the 6th-floor gymnasium and assisted them to their section’s assigned seats. Once all the teachers finally arrived at the gym, the students greeted them with a “Happy Teachers’ Day!” and had an opportunity to take pictures with them. In the picture-taking areas of the gym, like the Polaroid area, students and teachers took individual and group photos to capture the memories from that day.
The program was hosted by Zach Ty and Hoi Lam Xu. An icebreaker game was done first, called: “Guess the Teacher,” and it gave the students and teachers alike the opportunity to guess who the teacher was based on descriptions and prompts.
Moving on to the message by Pastor Don Juan, he shared a thoughtful message about a boy named Teddy and how he considered his teacher, Ms. Thompson, as a second mom whom he treasured deeply. This message taught us how teachers should treat their students well, as it can leave an impact on their lives. Pastor Don has also shared, “Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together” by Scott Hayden.
After Pastor Don’s message, the Student Council President, Summer Sy, shared her opening remarks to start off the long-awaited performances of the students.
The first performance was a rendition of the song You Are The Reason by Sylvia Wong performed by the School’s choir Melodies of Hope, coordinated by Ms. Jeanette Corsega.
The next presentation performed by the PMC Worship Band who gave their own twist on a classic Taylor Swift song Fearless along with a Jessie J melody Flashlight. With the latter experience creating a truly unforgettable moment with students and teachers, in perfect synchronization, illuminating the room with the warm glow of their flashlights, creating a magical atmosphere throughout the performance.
After that performance was a blast to the past as Zion Mallari and Rudy De Leon of the Alumni Band “Table for Two”, featuring Roselyn De Leon performed Count On Me by Bruno Mars. Lastly, a KPOP dance performance was showcased, and included the host, Zach Ty, for their Super Shy by New Jeans moves.
The most exciting part of the program was the Awarding, which was presented by the hosts and Summer Sy. Prior to the program, students were given a form to answer, which served as the basis for this special segment entitled, “Students’ Choice Awards”, in which the students voted upon superlatives for their teachers. .
The first category was “Chillest Teacher,” where Mr. Ronnal Bugas and Dino Cortez are the chosen winners. These teachers are the ones who are calm, chill, easy-going, and cool.
Next was “Most Creative,” where Mr. Mark Andrew Rivera and Ms. Ann Margarita Muhi won the votes of the students. These are the teachers whose slide presentations, delivery, and projects are creative and unique.
After that was the award for “Rookie of the Year,” where Ms. Alyssa Aurelio and Michelle Quejada gained the award because of their hard work and compassion towards the students, despite being new teachers in MHCS.
Finally, the last award to be presented is the “Students’ Choice Award” where Mr. Ronnal Bugas and Ms. Victoria Apilado were ultimately called up to the stage. These teachers are the student-body favorite, the ones who stood out from the rest, and those that have greatly impacted the students.
Each teacher who won awards was given a sash with a gift card of P500.
Besides all these awards, a special “Lifetime Achievement” award was given to Mrs. Bernadeth Sigua for being the most loyal and longest-staying teacher in MHCS, being that she’s been a teacher here for over 20 years and counting.
Before concluding a touching and entertaining program for all, a video full of students’ greeting submissions and messages was flashed on the screen to show that they are not “super shy” to express their gratitude, appreciation, and love for all the perseverance of the beloved MHCS teachers.
Sir Niño Calilong, the Office of Student Activities Coordinator, finalized the program by giving his closing remarks and thanks to all the Student Council members, students, representatives, and other staff for making this program a success.
After the program, the teachers who won the “Student’s Choice Award” were interviewed to share their opinions and thoughts on winning such an award.
Mr. Ronnal Bugas and Ms. Victoria Apilado both stated that they were shocked and in disbelief that they even got called, especially Ms. Apilado.
She expressed how grateful she was for the students she has handled, is currently handling, and going to handle in the future. In her opinion, the reason why she was chosen was because of her consideration and lack of assignments to lessen the stress of students.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bugas expressed how he was so thankful to all the students who not only he impacted, but also the students who left an impression on him. In his opinion, the reason why he was chosen is his chill and cool attitude towards the students and the tasks given to them.
An important message they both wanted to express was a warm thanks for all the support and love that the students have given them and they both wished to continue spreading kindness and creating an impact on their students’ lives.
Although not all teachers won, there is no doubt that each of them truly has a special place in each students’ heart.Teachers are always considered to be second parents who can be counted on not only in our academic needs but also in personal lives and growth. After all, a simple lesson can completely redirect a child’s life.
