NOVEMBER 2022 was an important month for the Makati Hope Christian School community as it celebrated its first face-to-face English Week and Book Month celebration after two years, wherein students and teachers dressed as their favorite book characters.
They proceeded to parade around the school, as students without costumes joined the growing parade as it passed by their classroom. Enthusiasm was visible on everyone’s face; it has been a long time since everyone was permitted to join a face-to-
face school-wide gathering. “It was very amazing and fun,” remarked Juanne Victoria, from Grade 5 Daniel. To commemorate Book Month, students of all levels were given a Performance Task to complete for their English subject. This year’s theme was “Igniting the Passion for Reading.”
Cluster 1 (Grades 2-4) students created a Book Shelfie, where they showcased a selfie with their favorite book. Meanwhile, Cluster 2 (Grades 5-6) students designed a Digital Poster that
highlighted this year’s theme. On the other hand, students from Clusters 3 to 4 (Grades 7-9 and Grades 10-12) recorded a TikTok-like short video that presented a book from the library
and encouraged the viewers to read that book.
Andreana Janelle Sia from Grade 3 Nehemiah and Kacey Loreen Tan from Grade 4 Proverbs took home first place in the Best Book Shelfie Contest. Scoring second was Joshua Clark
Wage from Grade 2 Joshua and Juancho Ventanilla from Grade 3 Nehemiah. Then, Yushin Ong from Grade 3 Nehemiah and David Asher Lim-Sy from Grade 3 Ezra placed third in the contest. Pak Hei Xu, Geon Yoon, Sophia Chua, and Samantha Mislang from Grade 5 Isaiah
bagged first place in the Digital Poster Contest. They were followed by Klyve Chong, Daniel Zhang, Sofia Ang, Liwen Zhu, and Cassidy Ventanilla from Grade 5 Daniel. Meanwhile, Halle Chua, Joshua Santos, Javvis Lim, Zara Go, and Eliana Yap from Grade 6 Hosea snagged third place.
For the Cluster 3 BookTok Contest, Grade 7 Solomon’s Team Avatar (composed of YuQuan Seek, Maegan Tsai, Jasmine Yan, Leo Chan, Wilber Chow, and Wendy Wang) secured first
place. On the other hand, Grade 9 Jotham’s Team Magic School Bus (Paulyne Tan, Michael
Tan, Pathea Ko, Arielle Motol, Wandagrace Sy, Darius Cheng, and Eunice Garcia) won second place. Finally, Grade 9 Josiah’s Team Noli Me Tangere (Jimica Lau, Gianna Bairan, Karen Chong, Ethan Bala, Claudio Lu, Yunan Chou, and Andrea Hong) received third place.
When asked about her experience and feelings on the BookTok contest, first place team member Maegan Tsai said that, “It was the best; I won for the first time and I’m really happy about it. It was a really great experience.”
The same group’s editor Wendy Wang commented that, “It was interesting to record and was definitely educational in its own way.”
For the Cluster 4 BookTok Contest, Grade 12 Revelations Team Crazy Rich Asians (Clara Tan, Sijin Chen, John Matthew Directo, Kristie Chen, and Erin Mapanao) attained first place. Grade 12 Hebrews Team Five Love Languages (Aaron Co, Zi Yue Ma, Dean Yu, Sydney Uyking, Simone Delez, and Chalisa Ilagan) won second place. Grade 10 Amaziah’s Team First Aid Manual (Gabriel Aguilar, Ethan Dy, Yu-Hao Wang, Hoi Ying Chen, and Julliene Ngo) won third place.
This competition concluded this school year’s English Week and Book Month celebration.
