As the Philippines gets affected day by day by COVID-19, a virus that only seems to infect more and more as time goes by, President Dueturte declared a lockdown for Metro Manila which would last from March 15 to April 14 in an effort to help reduce the spread of this contagious virus.
With a lockdown in place, everything is now at a standstill which includes schools being closed for that duration. Since Makati Hope Christian School is located in the city of Makati, it is affected also by the lockdown, meaning there won’t be any school for a whole month for us, students.
Obviously with no school for that long, we were given Distance Education Module (DEM) and Alternative Learning Activities (ALA) for us to do at home so that we wouldn’t miss the required outputs we would have to submit for the quarter.
In my opinion, I honestly think it’s a good thing especially since we technically have our own schedule we can choose to anytime as long as submit it before the deadline. I can simply wake up whenever I want and still have the whole day to do them especially with how the minor and major subjects would be alternating with the different weeks. It makes our workloads a bit lighter in a sense, since the work being given is also something that doesn’t take a lot of time to finish.
We technically have a lot more free time which is what I like about them, especially since the deadline is already being given in advance which leaves us a lot more time to do them. This is why I’m grateful for the teachers for actually putting a lot of effort just so we can still pass their classes even from our homes amid this crisis.
The only thing I do not like about these DEMs and ALAs is that a student is just doing this to get it over with rather than learning and understanding the lessons we would miss. It’s like a task we just want to finish as quickly as we can just so we can do whatever we want.
This is why I prefer a classroom setting over the online task that is being given because you get to interact much better with your other classmates and teachers as opposed to having online classes where it doesn’t feel as “real” compared to actually learning with others.
Overall, we really have no reason to complain that we are getting school work while we are stuck at home, since after all we are supposed to be going to school if it weren’t for the lockdown. The deadlines are more than reasonable for us to accomplish the different tasks being given to us. Even though for me it feels more like a task than a lesson, I am still grateful to the teachers for putting in the effort to still teach us while all of us are still at home, so thank you.
