For the first time in years, Makati Hope Christian School (MHCS) has conducted full face-to-face classes, allowing all of its students to learn and socialize in a healthy environment without the barriers of COVID-19 and online classes between them. However, with this change came a rollercoaster of a month, especially during the first week. Let’s look back at the events of the first week of S.Y. 2023-2024.
On Monday, August 14, the students’ orientations were conducted at each section’s respective classroom for half a day, where the students would have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the class through different and creative ways chosen by their adviser. The section’s adviser would then orient the students on several points to remember during the school year, such as class expectations, homeroom routines, the MHCS core values, classroom rules and regulations, and more.
During the next three days, the Bible Learning Experience program—which is mandatory for all Makati Hope students—was held, with the main focus being discipline. It aimed to instill the institution's values within the hearts and minds of every student. This year’s theme was "Better Me" and was accompanied by its theme verse from 1 Corinthians 9:27 (NLT), "I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should, otherwise I myself might be disqualified."
Other than a short orientation at the sixth-floor gym for elementary and high school students, the class adviser and assisting teacher were the ones who handled the students. Each day was composed of lectures regarding discipline and plenty of icebreaker activities that students could enjoy. One could feel the competitiveness and pressure throughout the games as each group vied for first place. Overall, the experience was educational and enjoyable at the same time.
The last day of the week, August 18, marked the first day of regular classes. Most of the teachers only discussed their subject orientations, or in other cases, course guides, throughout the day. On the same day, the club fair was held, where students from Clusters 2 to 4 went up to the gym during their allotted times and visited and interacted with different club booths. The purpose of the club fair was to allow students to familiarize themselves with the wide selection of clubs and ultimately decide which club they would like to join for the entirety of the school year.
Each booth was creatively organized and unique in its own way, with students visiting the booths that caught their attention. It was a scene of chaos as students rushed into the gym and scattered before reluctantly heading out once their time was up. Afterward, the students returned to their classrooms to proceed with their following classes. As soon as the club applications were released, it is safe to assume that a wave of students rushed to complete them as fast as possible to secure a slot at their preferred club.
