In honor of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8 every year, we compiled a playlist featuring songs about women empowerment by well-known female artists such as Beyonce, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande.
Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya
Daya sings about how she doesn’t need a guy to fulfill her dreams. In Entertainment Weekly, she said “It’s about being a girl who pursues her own ambitions and battles for what she wants, regardless of who stands in her path. It’s important for young girls to understand that they don’t have to behave a certain way or depend on others to be happy. They have everything they need inside themselves.”
Fight Song by Rachel Platten
The lyrics tell us that in an unfair world like this, we need to learn how to fight, how to never give up and how to conquer our fears. It reminds us to not doubt ourselves, to be strong and to do what we want to do without hesitation.
Love Myself by Hailee Steinfield
Hailee’s song leaves a strong self-empowerment message. In an interview with Noisey, she said “It’s about being able to provide for yourself and knowing how much power there is in that.” The chorus part applies to self-empowerment, “Gonna love myself, no I don’t need anybody else,” Hailee sings.
Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande
In this song, Ariana shamelessly reveals her vulnerability by publicly naming her ex-boyfriends. She then realizes that after everything she’s encountered, the only thing that matters the most is the relationship she has with herself.
Who Says by Selena Gomez
This song is about how we should accept ourselves for who we are. Selena left a message especially to teenagers about accepting their flaws and can be who they want to be. People may bring you down, but you should stand up for yourself and prove them wrong.
The Man by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift sings about the disparities between men and women in society and the entertainment industry. It shows how the privileges are being believed more. She mentioned that women hear for not being believed about sexual misconduct. In the lyrics, “If I was the man, then I’d be the man,” she wonders the perspective of how her life would be different if she were a man in music. Hopefully, this song can inspire women and as well as for men. For the time being, women will continue to keep on running as fast as they can.
Truth Hurts by Lizzo
Lizzo, a renowned female singer, has a number of hit songs and this is one of them. In the lyrics, women empowerment is clearly displayed. It illustrates that women are powerful and strong and most importantly, women can have it all.
Confident by Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato also known as the queen of confidence wrote a song about being body-positive to inspire those who are feeling insecure of themselves. In an interview, she opened up about her body which reflects the song’s message. There are girls and women who are displeased about how their bodies look. Women should support and empower other women. The artist, who says she’s “never been confident enough to feel sexy,” is now encouraging people to love every inch of themselves.
Independent Women, Pt.1 by Destiny’s Child
The song’s message is about the power of a woman who doesn’t need a man to depend on. Women are known to fight for their independence from the power of men and are demanding the power they deserve.
Shout Out to My Ex by Little Mix
This song expresses how thankful she is for her ex because the ups and downs, the breakup and the pain shaped her to who she is today. It taught her valuable lessons and strength.
Above all, a woman “is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future. (Proverbs 31:25)” Whatever circumstances thrown at them, best believe that they can soar above through these. They possess strength in their own right, dignified in the purpose that they are created by the Lord.
Like every Christian woman in our school, may they serve as a model and inspiration to strive hard to follow God’s example and be a light to the world, a world so consumed with pain, struggles, and darkness.
Shout out to all the Rahabs out there, who possess courage to do the right thing. Let’s exemplify all the Queen Esthers out there, who stay committed to their life’s purpose. Even if the going gets tough.
May all Ruths out there continue to check their lives always and adjust according to God’s word. And all the Marys out there who gladly work for God and stay excited as they complete and accomplish God’s mission for them.
