Truth Hurts but Silence Kills

Updated: Nov 10

Armed with pens as mighty swords and paper that serves as a shield, journalists represent the protective wall that defends the truth and safeguards against external threats to ensure that news will always be accurate and fair. In a world driven by information, narratives shaped by perceptions and truth being the ultimate pursuit, journalists emerge as the fearless avengers who bring forth stories that are both captivating and inspiring, uncovering the hidden truths of reality while also leaving a mark that transcends time. However as the sands of time swiftly shift away, the unsung heroes of truth increasingly face an ominous threat, as they pay the ultimate price for their commitment to serve the people. As we bear witness to the sacrifice that these noble individuals have committed, it is now our time to stand united to condemn the violence and ensure that we continue to live in a world where truth will always prevail.

Day of a Life of a Journalist

Juan Jumalon, also recognized by his on-air alias, DJ Johnny Walker, stood as a figure in the realm of Filipino radio broadcasting, where he lent his voice to 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM, a modest five-kilowatt radio station, which he passionately operated from the confines of his residence in Calamba town, Misamis Occidental. Fueled by passion, DJ Johnny Walker animated the airwaves with his music picks and lively commentary. He used Facebook Live to effortlessly connect with his audience to create a special bond through his engaging broadcast.

However, suddenly around 5:22 am, two armed men, both wearing caps, appeared outside the house gate. They claimed to have a public announcement about the gunman's lost belongings. The staff then agreed to hear them out. Shockingly, one of the men then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the staff member. Simultaneously, the other intruder entered the radio booth, shooting the broadcaster twice. The bullets hit his lower lip and the back of his head, resulting in the fatal loss of the journalist's life. The assailant snatched the broadcaster’s necklace before swiftly escaping on a motorcycle with a third accomplice, who served as a lookout. This distressing incident unfolded before many individuals' eyes as it was captured on Jumalon’s Facebook livestream and a CCTV camera.

Aftermath

Despite the immediate efforts of his family to rush him to the hospital, Jumalon was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. His untimely demise marked the fourth journalist killed since President Bongbong Marcos assumed power. According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Jumalon now stands as the 199th journalist to lose their life since the restoration of democracy in 1986. This chilling incident underscores the persistent dangers journalists confront in the Philippines, a nation that has unfortunately earned a reputation as one of the most risky places for media workers.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) immediately put up a response to denounce the killing, emphasizing the imperative need to safeguard journalists in the pursuit of their professional activities. The condemnation underscores the global recognition of the vital role journalists play in informing the public and the necessity to ensure their protection as they fulfill this critical function.

As the Philippines underwent a presidential transition from Rodrigo Duterte to Bongbong Marcos, there was a collective hope within the media community for a safer environment for journalists. Regrettably, this optimism has been eclipsed by a persistent wave of incidents targeting media professionals. In the year 2022, the nation witnessed a series of shootings involving radio presenters, among them Jhannah Villegas, Federico ‘Ding’ Gempesaw, Rey Blanco, and Percival ‘Percy Lapid’ Mabasa. Dishearteningly, this perilous situation persisted into 2023, raising concerns about the safety and security of journalists in the country.

The tragic killing of Jumalon serves as a stark reminder of the severe perils encountered by journalists in the Philippines. This heinous act highlights the immediate and pressing need for authorities in the country to intensify their efforts to ensure the safety of journalists. It emphasizes the critical call to break the cycle of impunity that jeopardizes the lives of those dedicated to informing the public. Swift and decisive action is imperative to create an environment where journalists can carry out their essential work without fear for their very lives.

Why We Should Act Now

Journalists are the guardians of democracy. They serve as the voice of the people, bringing to light stories that might otherwise remain in the shadows. By defending journalists, we are safeguarding the very foundation of a democratic society. Informed citizens are essential for a thriving democracy, and journalists play an irreplaceable role in ensuring that citizens have access to accurate and diverse information.

The Philippines has a history of being a dangerous place for journalists, with a concerning number of cases involving violence and discrimination. Acting now is crucial to break this cycle of danger and establish an environment where journalists can do their essential work without fear of reprisal. A safer atmosphere for journalists is not only a matter of protecting individuals but also a necessity for fostering a united country and holding those in power accountable.

Press freedom is intertwined with the value of human rights. The freedom of expression, a fundamental human right, finds its embodiment in a free press. By allowing journalists to investigate, report, and disseminate information without fear of censorship, the press contributes to societal awareness and can propel collective action toward positive change.

In the ever-evolving landscape of human communication, the phrase "journalism is an act of faith in the future" resonates as a profound testament to the enduring commitment of journalists worldwide.

The consequences of misinformation, polarization, and a lack of accountability can leave a lasting impact, hindering progress and challenging the very foundations of our well-being. These consequences affect our ability to evaluate information and diminish the sense of community and trust between individuals and society.

Journalism becomes a bridge for knowledge, providing individuals with the context and insights needed to actively participate in civic life. This act of fostering informed individuals is an investment in a future where knowledge is held in high regard and where values are given a chance to grow to create the foundation of a path toward a more promising tomorrow.

Promoting press freedom requires collective efforts from individuals, civil society, and governments. By advocating for legal protections, supporting independent media, and fostering a culture of media literacy, we can contribute to the safeguarding of press freedom and the preservation of an informed society and become closer to the heart of the world.
