The Coffee Shop Effect

Updated: Nov 2

The scent of freshly brewed coffee beans together with an earthy, rustic atmosphere is just a utopian-inspired workplace for everyone. Perfectly pleasant but not too ecstatic nor overwhelming to kill the working spirit within us.

In the Philippines, coffee shops have been go-to places for more than just a delightful dining experience. It has given an avenue for corporate meetings, make-shift offices and review desks.

At this point of human existence, it just is just so difficult to get work done. There is technology, fatigue, daydreaming and a lot of distractions that just seem more appetizing than working. This leads to cramped-up work and unmet deadlines both very unsatisfactory outcomes whether in a workplace or in the academe.

Coffee shops may just have a way of getting everyone’s creative juices and innovative brain cells activated. The lighting, aroma and the coffee experience all collide to give a workaholic his perfect state of Nirvana. A workload that has been delayed for over some time suddenly becomes a task that can be fitted into a two-three hour working slot.

Breaking things down

The motivating atmosphere within a coffee shop may not be just an external motivator after all but is also our willpower that goes in tandem with it. Booogaard, in her article published in 2018, stated that there is a default preference of the brain that is satisfied with the coffee shop atmosphere, the love for novelty, while the willpower also plays a good role into the extra push. The move to change the environment shifts our brains to think that there is an urgency to finish a certain task.

Alternatives

With those factors, one can tweak things up with the available workplace at home.

In order to invite the sense of novelty, it is an option to get a corner at home to become your official workplace. Have a table setup and surround it with aesthetic elements that can excite the brain.

On another hand, setup work routines that give a balance time of relaxation and work. Perhaps, you may check out the Pomodoro technique online or download scheduled application blockers on your phone.
