Radio Pop Culture has Commercialized Activism | Pop culture has commercialized activism, movements, and social justice for profit, rather than cause any real change. While it can be said that celebrities bring more attention to these causes, many are simply doing it for the recognition, popularity, and of course–the money that comes along with it. For many in the industry, advocacies like social justice and the environment are merely another way to boost their name and gain sponsorship deals. We see this all the time, like when a big actor or actress posts about a fundraiser they've started–but do they really care about the cause past the fundraiser period, or do they just leave it in the dust after the trend exits the spotlight? At the end of the day, most influencers don't care about what they promote; they just want the benefits that come with it. |
Relations Social Media Isn't a Place to Learn | Social media often presents the idealized version of life, resulting in difficulty in finding a path one actually prefers. Social media can also have negative influences on a person, as cyberbullying, online hate, and toxic relationships are prevalent online. Moreover, it's also a distraction by posing addiction problems and preventing personal development (hobbies, talents, studies). This directs people away from real-life opportunities for growth. Social media is also very shallow, lacking in depth, and without the social skills needed in the real world. As if that’s not enough, it encourages validation-seeking behavior as well: fishing for likes, comments, shares, and attention from others can diminish a sense of self-worth and confidence. Together, these elements of social media prevent it from being an effective place to grow up on and become a better person. |
Projects Musical Soundtracks are Underrated | Broadway music and other musical soundtracks deserve more love! They are very motivating to listen to while engaging in productive tasks, although it's advisable to exercise caution when doing so while studying to avoid losing focus. Classics like Hamilton, Les Miserables, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, and many others have the power to uplift one's mood and enhance the overall experience. |
Editor-In-Chief Philippine Politics & The Press | We all know about Marcos Sr. and Duterte’s animosity towards the press, but where will PBBM fit into this issue? While under two years is too early to say, it doesn’t mean there hasn’t been any action (or lack thereof) towards the issue. “The son shall not be punished for his father's sins, nor the father for his son's.” The verse from Ezekiel 18:20 was popularized and consequently used to defend the name and reputation of President Bongbong Marcos since 2016, when the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago defended his lineage by saying, “I don’t believe the sins of the father should be set on the children. What kind of philosophy is that?” But now that he is in power, will the son continue the sins of his father? With only a little over a year in office, many are quick to criticize PBBM’s current reign and his response to past issues, growing controversies, and promises to fulfill. Concerning the state of the press, PBBM deeply contrasts his predecessor by speaking amicably towards the press. However, no actions have been taken to protect them or address the dangers that threaten them. But is fifteen months truly enough time to create lasting changes? The answer is no, but that isn’t to say that no efforts could have been made at all. With attacks still running rampant and media containment continuing, what’s our assurance this won’t be the final nail in journalism’s coffin? |
