Change at its Unfinest: Insights on Enola Holmes

Finding someone else ends with finding a place for oneself.

Spoiler Alert!

R E H S E R F E R

Enola was taught and raised by her mother to be independent for 16 years in their own home. On her 16th birthday, she awoke to the sudden disappearance of her mother.

Sherlock and Mycroft, Enola’s brothers, travelled back home to locate and bring back their mother. Along with this, Mycroft insisted to send Enola to a boarding school to make her fit for society. Knowing nothing of the world outside, she constructed a plan and searched for clues to escape and find her mother.

En route, she met Marquess of Basilwether, Viscount Tewkesbury whom she journeyed with to outrun an unknown murderer. After several encounters, disguises, and word puzzles, she managed to understand the motif of the killer.

In the end, Enola paved the way for the dreams of many women including her own; a vision her mother wanted for her.

When we first met Mycroft Holmes, it was obvious that he was very conservative of society’s standards and norms. He made fun of his mother’s plans and actions to fight for feminism. He wanted Enola to fit into society and get rid of everything she learned from her mother by sending her to boarding school.

Today, the problem does not only lie on women empowerment, but also on activism. In the movie, the two sides were clearly shown: conservatists (Mycroft Holmes and Tewkesbery’s grandmother) and activists (Enola’s mother, Tewkesbury, and Tewkesbury’s father).

Many do not realize that they are doing it not only for their future, but everyone’s future. Enola’s mother took great action to change the future for her daughter. To be clear on the definition of activism, it is the practice that pushes for action to be done regarding a controversial issue.

A lot of people regard it as creating mischief, without considering the fact that the world they are in is already unfavorable for many. Numerous activists are being killed just to stop them from making the world a better place, like how Tewkesbury’s grandmother wanted to murder his own son for supporting women’s rights.

The world today needs to be changed. Activism is not being disobedient, but it is the awakening of the people to the many issues we face.

Those subtitles are not typos! If you’ve managed to get “refresher” and “in real life”, then well done detective! You’re ready to become... Enola’s apprentice!
