An Honest Opinion from a Parent on DEM and ALA

Updated: Nov 1

With the current pandemic that is happening globally, Candle Pen has decided to ask a parent, who will remain unidentified, on their opinion on the Distance Education Modules (DEMs) and Alternative Learning Activities (ALAs).

DEM and ALA are the learning methods that Makati Hope Christian School is employing with the one month class suspensions.

Q: Are DEMs and ALAs a good solution to make-up for class suspension and why?

A: No, the students do not really understand the lesson well and some do not take them seriously.

Q: What is the impact of these on the students?

A: The students lack concentration when doing DEMs and ALA at home since they can still have access to the television, gadgets, and the like. Unlike in school, they are more motivated and can concentrate more.

Q: What are the benefits of this system of learning?

A: Having DEMs will keep the students busy. They could have advanced reading of the topics to be tackled.

Q: What are the downsides of these?

A: The activities lack explanation for them to really understand the lesson. If there are written works to be accomplished and need assistance, parents would need to devote their time to help them. Some topics also need to be researched before we fully understand to be able to guide them.

Q: What do you think about the system of alternating subjects every other week?

A: Every other week is okay. As we have experienced last time, all the DEMs and ALAs for every subject were given altogether to be finished within a week was too much and became stressful for students and parents.

Q: How can these be further improved?

A: DEMs and ALAs should be a way to continue the students’ learning process but should not be a substitute for make-up classes where lectures will be given just like an ordinary school day. Face to face class sessions is still the most effective way for learning since children can interact directly with the teachers after their lecture.
